good story about our new World Champ

World champion is Yorkshire to the core

Leeds athlete Alistair Brownlee

After being crowned the world’s best in triathlon earlier this month, having taken the sport by storm with an unprecedented undefeated season, Alistair Brownlee merits the status of northern treasure.

The 21-year-old deserves recognition from the Yorkshire tourist board for the passionate way he talks about living and training on the edge of the Dales. He may have travelled extensively for his sport, most recently competing on the Gold Coast in Australia in the Grand Final of the World Championship Series, but there is nowhere he would rather be than at his family home in Horsforth.

“You realise how lucky you are here with small roads with no cars on them and freedom to run,” he said. “It’s an inspiring place to train. If the weather was a bit better, it would be perfect.”

Together with his younger brother, Jonathan, 19, who came second on the world junior circuit, he can be seen happily pounding the tracks and turf around Otley Chevin or on Ilkley Moor. His environment, he says, has played a large part in his success. “I don’t think either of us would be in the position we are now if we didn’t live here,” he said. “We train because we love it. You just want to go out training. It’s fantastic.”

As they walk into the Marriott Hotel and Country Club with backpacks slung across their hooded sweatshirts it is astonishing how young they look. The barman should really ask them for ID.

Yet the older Brownlee has not only held his own against men several years his senior, he has left them trailing in his wake. Simon Whitfield, the Canadian who was triathlon’s first gold medal-winner at Sydney 2000, said Brownlee’s run in the final last weekend was one of the fastest he could recall.

His startlingly mature performances have defied conventional wisdom that triathletes reach their peak as they near 30. This may have something to do with his introduction to the sport at the tender age of 10, inspired by his uncle, who competed for fun. “It’s been a blessing,” he said. “We’ve already got ten years of triathlon training behind us.”

VANCOUVER’S MOST AWESOME: RYAN REYNOLDS!

POSTED April 21, 2009 BY Bob K

He’s talented and charming, the star of a slew of Hollywood movies in all different genres, a one-time New York Marathon competitor, husband to Scarlett Johansson… oh, and a graduate of Kitsilano Secondary! Ryan Reynolds is a national and regional treasure, born and raised in this fair city and always a fan of it. We’re proud to bring you a few of the things that Ryan finds the most awesome about Vancouver…

ryanreynolds1590

What makes Vancouver awesome?
Well, it’s my home - but that isn’t what makes the city awesome. To me, it’s the progressive nature of the city’s people. Not to be overlooked is the overwhelming, jaw dropping, retina-searing beauty of world class mountains literally minutes from downtown.

Who’s your favourite Vancouverite?
My favourite Vancouverite? It’s a toss up, between David Suzuki and Raymond Burr. David Suzuki introduced me to the concept of environmentalism at a very young age. He helped galvanize a movement that became a lifestyle for which I’ve carried over to every aspect of my world. And Raymond Burr was on the popular 80’s legal drama, “Perry Mason.” He had a cool beard.

Desperately Seeking Kids Who Wanna Run

Barrie Shepley, the Olympic triathlon coach, sent out a desperate plea this week looking for 1,000 kids to run in a one-miler as part of the Kinetico Running Festival on Sunday in Caledon.

Barrie wrote: “You know that I am an eternal optimist. I need your help. I am trying desperately to bring 1000 kids together to set a national record. You can't imagine how difficult it can be to try to give away 1000 FREE race entries.

“Free race t-shirt. Free finishers medal. Free souvenir poster, as well as a great goody bag and a chance to meet some of top elite and international athletes like Lisa Bentley (11x Ironman Champion), Sean Bechtel (Pan American Games triathlete), Reid Coolsaet (our top marathoner at 2hrs 16 minutes), Cameron Sylvester (Olympic rower) and Jade Scognamillo (the 15 year old who recently swam Lake Ontario and became the youngest woman ever (in 19hrs and 59 minutes).”

Sounds like a heckuva good deal. There’s also a 5k and 10 miler as part of the festival, which aims to create a family/supportive environment.

Barrie says the one-mile run is short and easily attainable for all ages. There will be 3-year-olds walking and older kids jogging or running. There is a climbing wall, a live band and some great draw prizes for the entire family.

The races start at 12:30pm (10-miler), 5km at 1pm and the One Miler at 2:10pm, giving people a chance to sleep in on Sunday morning and still enjoy the afternoon run/festivities.

There’s a significant chartitable aspect as well as both the Ontario Lung Association and the local food bank will benefit from the event.

They need people pre-registered in advance to properly provide food and shirts for all. “I guarantee you that this will be a memorable afternoon for all involved,” wrote Barrie.

Lastly, they’re also looking for volunteers at the event. Anyone interested can email Luisa Ruby, the volunteer coordinator, at ltruby@rogers.com. You can register and get more info at http://www.c3online.ca/index.shtml.

from Macleans.ca

Simon Whitfield (Olympic triathlon champion, Victoria, B.C.)
“When I won in Sydney I was 24 years old, dreamed only of winning gold and that drove every decision I made. Now nine years later, my goal is still the same, to compete at the highest level but it comes with a condition: family first. There’s nothing quite like finishing a tough training session then coming home to laughter in the bouncy castle! Although I have to admit my favorite game is the one when she curls up in the corner and says “nap time,” it only last 10 seconds but sometimes it’s all we need.”

Triathletes make their point on sponsorship dispute

Article from: The Australian

THE world's leading triathletes flexed their collective political muscle today to defeat the national federations in a dispute over advertising logos on their race uniforms.

Most of the top-10 ranked male and female athletes, including Australians Emma Snowsill, Brad Kahlefeldt and Courtney Atkinson, invaded the International Triathlon Union's congress at the Gold Coast to protest against a proposal that would have given the national federations control over advertising space on uniforms.

The proposal, put by the French federation, was particularly inflammatory because, if passed, it would have seriously hindered the ability of individual athletes to attract sponsorship.

Currently athletes are allowed to advertise their personal sponsors on their uniforms.

The triathletes marched into the congress room and stood at the back of the meeting, prompting the ITU to call a tea break before the vote.

The athletes lobbied the voting members furiously during the break and won the day when the proposal was defeated an hour later. Triathlon Australia sided with the athletes after meeting with them before the congress began.

Leading triathletes claimed the result was a victory for athlete power.

"We went in and stood up the back and they got the point," Atkinson said.

my daughter the guitarist.

Jennie and I were just talking about Pippa's naps as they were getting shorter and shorter. she's starting to make it through the whole day without a nap.

"no nap no nap".

There are pros and cons to "no nap no nap" as the nap gives us a nice break in the day to catch up, drink coffee together and get odd jobs down but she tends to
stay up later in the evening, especially if the nap goes longer then 1hr. Anyway we were chatting about it on Skype today, Jennie had just said how Pippa didn't want to nap today. When she went down stairs she found our little guitarist fast asleep on the sofa. Makes me think I might do the same.

Before I do that I suppose I better update my blog, I've been slacking. Twitter has been so much easier. I've been busy taking the piss out of Peter Croes on twitter as he wouldn't know good coffee if the world Barista Champion moved into his house. I think he's been sharing powders with fellow Belgium athlete Tom Boo...

training has been going well. Brent and I are rooming together and we're slowly yet surely navigating the "I just flew to Australia and now I have all these damn sore spots" minefield. Kim and Rob have been working their magic and we're both coming around. I'm glad we got here early.

We're staying on the 25th floor right on the beach, it's a hard life but someone has to do it. I think I can see Perth if I look inland and Sarah Palins house if I look out across the ocean at a slight North East angle.....she's waving, smart lady that Palin....

Race week is always interesting before championships, searching for feel without panicking when it doesn't come on demand. Coach has a great plan though and more importantly a calm demeanor so I'm confident I'll be ready for a crack at it.

It's Dexter time. season 3, we're about to watch the episode where he dishes out justice to this this OLD tall American guy who was born in NZ, moved to the Gold Coast as a kid and now lives in the states.

I predict he feeds him to the sharks.

Sounds interesting ;)

you might be thinking that the lines in the sand are from a truck.
they aren't.

The rumour going around is that our chiro Rob "elbow grease" Hasegawa drew those lines in the sand with his foot at 3:37am and proclaimed to those poor souls who assembled at 5:30am "if you so choose to cross these lines I have drawn in the sand you are entering my world, a world of pain and sacrifice, if you are brave enough to join me, to venture into your soul and discover your true metal, your inner strength, face your chi, your chia tea latte, your lifeforce and gather in your hand the power that is in all of us to push forward, the will to survive, to destroy any obstacle thrown at you, to overcome then I welcome you to BOOT CAMP 2009 'GOLD COAST' ".

(it airs on NBC this fall in prime time, please check your local listings).

from what the producers told us afterwards Kim and Sharon just strolled across the line and simply said
