eye opening

I just happened to watch this yesterday, I was getting off the treadmill and thought I'd stop and watch "coaches corner". I was stunned that I didn't know more about the war in Afghanistan. Over 100 men and women have died, so many of them in their early 20's.

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/hockeynightincanada/coachscorner/

Watch this video and look at their ages and their faces. I'm at home running on my treadmill and going about my day and these Canadian families are losing fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters. The final photo is heart wrenching.

Thanks Simon. Mark Anthony Graham was my teammate at Nebraska, after being a Canadian Olympian himself in track. He was a great guy, and I miss him. It was even more heart wrenching that he was killed in a friendly fire accident with my countrymen.

The amazing thing is what is happening to the Canadian Armed Forces. Look at the rank of these amazing soldier who have given their lives. The Canadian Forces are loosing a huge number of NCOs and officers. These people are part of the fabric of our Forces that pass on experience in battle and make up a core of knowledge within the ranks up return to Canada. I guess this is a remarkable comment to the existing expereience of our Forces that so many NCOs and officers are on the front lines in Afghanistan. Our Forces may be small in number but clearly are huge in experience and commitment.
We are so lucky, they are so dedicated. Lest we forget.

Wow - this is so sad how many families this war has affected. My husbands boss had his son over their 2 times and his other son is a reporter and went over to do a story, I can only imagine what was going through his head at those times. Thankfully they both returned.
Sure do hope that this ends sooner than later!

I went running with a local group this past weekend and chanced to meet someone who was in the same ofsaa junior 1500m final with me 17 years ago. Olympian Kevin Sullivan won our race handily.

Another image that stuck with me from that ofsaa in '91 was of a powerful senior who won both the 200m and 400m. Last night, I looked him up on the internet to find out what happened to him. After high school, he ran the fastest leg on the Canadian mens' 4x400m relay at the '92 Olympics. Then, at some point, he signed up with the army. He was killed in Afghanistan: #32 on your list, Private Mark Anthony Graham.

It seems that some of us only dream of greatness, while others achieve it.

As an American I feel sick to my stomach about the amount of "friendly fire" deaths. I am sad that we are involved in these conflicts and hope that we can find a new way over the next four years.
